CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN MICHIGAN
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) - Heart Disease and Stroke
- CVD is the major cause of death in Michigan. In 1992, heart disease and stroke killed 31,950 Michiganians, more than
cancer, accidents, pneumonia, influenza, AIDS, homicide and suicide combined.
- One out of every two deaths in Michigan is due to CVD.
- The economic burden of CVD in Michigan in 1994 was estimated at $4.76 billion.*
- Michigan ranks 12th worst in the nation for CVD mortality (1990 data)*
- About 45% of CVD deaths could be prevented with changes in lifestyle and behavior.
- More than one in five Michiganians has CVD.
Heart Disease
- Heart disease is the major cause of death due to CVD.
- Michigan has the 7th worst age-adjusted Coronary Heart Disease death rate in the nation (1990)*
- Coronary Heart Disease is one of the most prevalent and preventable forms of heart disease.
- Since the mid-1970's, Michigan's age-adjusted heart disease death rate has been above the national rate.
- Michigan age-adjusted heart disease death rate for African Americans has increased or remained approximately the same since
1985, while the national rate has declined consistently. This disparity is even greater for death rates in African American
men.
Stroke
- Stroke is the leading cause of severe disability and is the third leading cause of death.
- High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke.
- Michigan is ranked as 19th worst in the nation for stroke mortality (1990 data)*
Multiple Risk Factors for CVD
- The major modifiable risk factors for CVD are cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and physical
inactivity,
- About 74% of premature deaths in Michigan are due to cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol.
- The more risk factors an individual has, the greater the risk of death.
- Eight out of 1 0 Michigan adults have one or more CVD risk factors.

Michigan Findings*
- One in three children are overweight.
- Four out of 10 children have high blood cholesterol.
- One out of five African American girls, one out of six African American boys, and one out of 12 White children have
significant blood pressure elevation.

Smoking Trends
- Smoking is increasing in adolescents.
- One out of 10 adolescents smoke regularly, with Whites being more likely to smoke than African Americans.
Physical Inactivity
- Television viewing is said to be the greatest contributor to inactivity and obesity among youth. One out of three
children watch TV five or more hours per day.
- Sixty-three percent of Michigan high school students fail to meet the minimum national standard for physical activity - at
least three - 20 minute sessions weekly.
Michigan Health Rankings
- Highest chronic disease death rate in the nation (1990 CDC report).
- Highest overweight rate in the nation in 1991 and ranking has varied from highest to sixth highest in years 1988-1993.
- Consistently higher than average CVD risk factors (smoking, overweight, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol).
