ENJOY AUTUMN "AROUND THE LAKES" IN ALPENA AREA
This self-guided auto color tour gives you a first hand look at the tranquil natural beauty that awaits you in northeast Michigan. Your trip could include a side trip to two historic lighthouses on Lake Huron: Old Presque Isle Lighthouse (believed to be haunted) and "Hand-On" Museum and the "New" 1870 Presque Isle Lighthouse or discover the distinctive natural characteristics of the Besser Natural Area Preserve.
This auto tour begins in Alpena traveling north on US-23 to Long Lake Road (approximately 8 miles north of the city limits).
Turn left and follow Long Lake Road along the shore about 12 miles to Bolton Road. Turn right and travel about 4 miles to North Grand Lake Road. Turn left, and then right less than a mile later on Miller Road (County Road 427) and head north to US-23.
Turn right and head south on US-23 about 3 miles to County Road 638; turn left and head east to Grand Lake Road (County Road 405).
Take a left turn at the intersection for a side trip to the two historic lighthouses on the peninsula.
Return to Grand Lake Road to the intersection of County Road 638 and continue south through the village of Presque Isle. Continue on Grand Lake Road.
Past the southern tip of Grand Lake, another side trip awaits. Besser Natural Area is located less than a mile to the left off of Grand Lake Road.
After stretching your legs on the footpath, return to Grand Lake Road, turning left and continuing to US-23. Turn left and head south on US-23 back to Alpena.
