Sleepy Hollow State Park, located in Clinton County, contains over 2,600 acres and is situated on Price Road off from US-27 near St. Johns, Ovid and Laingsburg. A river winds it's way through the woods and fields of the park and Lake Ovid is nestled in the middle of it all. Lake Ovid is a 410 acre lake which developed from the Little Maple River

Camping and Day Use

The park has a modern campground consisting of 181 sites. Each site has an asphalt pad, fire ring, picnic table, electricity and ample room for tents. The campground is serviced by two toilet/shower buildings, 14 water stations, and a sanitation station. A rustic youth organization site is available to youth groups, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church and school groups and their leaders. The campsite has vault toilets, fire circles, hand pump and picnic tables.

A 1/2 mile long beach is located northwest of the campground with picnic tables, play equipment, beach house, phones and a Beach Concession which is located 300 yards from the campground. The Concession is open from May to September and offers picnic supplies, charcoal, souvenirs, ice, food, soft drinks and wood.

Three picnic areas are located within the park. Each of the picnic areas have vault toilets, hand water pumps, picnic tables, grills, play equipment and a shelter. In addition, the East Picnic Area has a ballfield and the picnic shelter is equipped with a fireplace, the West Picnic area offers a fishing pier to visitors and the Island Picnic area offers a bridge to the largest island on Lake Ovid. Each shelter is available at no charge on a first-come-first-serve basis or is reservable at $40.00/day.

Trail Information

There are 16 miles of trails that take you through prairie grasses, hardwood forest and stands of pine trees. Mountain bikes are allowed on all park trails.

There are 8 miles of groomed cross country ski trails located on the East side of the park. Snowmobiling is allowed in the West end of the park when there is at least four inches of snow on the ground. Snowmobiles are prohibited on cross country ski trails, and must have a current registration.

Boating and Fishing

Lake Ovid has proven to be a very popular fishing lake with a wide variety of fish such as tiger muskellunge, pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, rock bass, perch, catfish and bullheads. Lake Ovid is a no wake lake. A boat launch is available to put your boat in. For those without a boat, the Boat Concession, open from May to September, is located near the boat launch and offers rentals, live bait, fishing supplies, ice and food.


The State Park is open to hunting and trapping during the appropriate seasons. The hunting is excellent for ducks, deer, rabbit, and squirrel. Turkey, woodcock, pheasant, quail and grouse are also found in the park.

Other Attractions

The park offers year-round opportunity to enjoy birding. Over 228 species have been recorded in Sleepy Hollow, from the common Blue Jay to the Eastern Bluebird. During migration, look for waterfowl in Lake Ovid. The rarely recorded Bonaparte's Gull or Bald Eagle have also been sighted.
